Connecting a printer to a TNC

NC FAQ1038

Question:

The manual describes how to output directly to a printer via the RS232 interface using the FN 16 Data function. Unfortunately, it does not say what type of printer is necessary nor what type of cable is needed. I have already tried a matrix printer and an inkjet printer from HP, and always receive the message “Ext. data in-/output not ready”. I also tried connecting it to the operating panel and in the electrical cabinet (X21), but always with the same result.

Answer:

If you want to run a printer via RS 232 (V24), you must use a serial printer. However, these printers have become pretty rare. You should connect the printer using a serial interface cable (ID 274545).

Another possibility, if your control is equipped with an Ethernet card, would be to use a network printer. A normal printer cannot be used since printer drivers cannot be installed on the control.
